Trek Hacks: How to choose your trekking shoes

Trek: Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek

The first thing before planning for a trek must always be Trekking Shoes. We all know buying trekking shoes is a tedious task these days. With a variety of brands booming in the market and many options available it confuses us. It is difficult to find one authentic brand for all types of trekkers. To make your search for an Ideal Trekking Shoe, we have come to your rescue. Our Trek Leader has tried to explain every detail of a trekking shoe, its importance and which brand offers the best. You can watch the video guide here:

  1. Preferably select high-ankle shoes. They prevent ankle injuries. They provide stability while walking on rocks or while descending.
  2. The important parts to look for while selecting the shoes must be,
  • Outer surface: Earlier it used to be leather. However, they are used even today. Go for shoes with synthetic (polyester nylon) outer as they are light and dry fast. The outer must be Waterproof or at least Water resistant. Check the type of Waterproof membrane, the most popular brand is Gore Tex.
  • Midsole/Insole: There are various types of midsole available. Choose one that is abrasion-resistant for the prevention of blisters. They usually come for high-ankle shoes. Insoles provide comfort and cushioning to the feet. Do not fall prey to cheap insoles. You can choose the soles of Ortholite for the best comfort.
  • Sole: This is the most important part of the shoe to keep your feet in proper contact with the ground. No doubt, Vibram is the most recognised company for soles. Make sure the sole is flexible and not hard like Snow boots. Now, based on the shape of your foot, choose the shoes accordingly. For example, for broader feet do not buy narrow-sole shoes. Else the feet will slide ahead while walking.
  1. Be aware of shops that sell the first copy of many branded shoes.
  2. Usually, a combination of Gore Tex Waterproof membrane, Aptonia/Ortholite insoles and Vibram soles are considered the best. But these are expensive too. If you are a frequent trekker and feel it is worth investing in these then shoes you must.
  3. Else there are other shoes of the lower price range for less frequent trekkers.
  4. The fit of the shoe: Always buy a shoe +1 of your foot size. After walking for long hours, feet tend to swell and need extra space. With 1-2 layers of wool socks on cold days also suffice the need.
  5. If possible get used to the shoes before bringing them on the actual trek by using them for 2-3 hours of a short hike.
